WHAT

STEAM Professional Development Workshop

WHY

This artifact demonstrates my ability to plan and enhance current and future instructional technology needs by
ensuring users are well informed, skilled and support the systems. This STEAM PD Workshop enables educators to meet current needs and anticipate and plan for future needs.

How these outcomes map to preparing teachers to help students to be college and career-ready

This PD section aligns with the 21st-century education model, bringing art teachers confidence to implement technology in their classrooms. In 21st century education, it is crucial to prepare students for their digital future, become digital citizens, and prepare them for possible new careers in the current digital era. More and more, job opportunities have been seeking multi-skilled talents. We designed this PD STEAM project according to the tasks required for future job opportunities. It suggests participants extend multidisciplinary activities such as art, technology, science with math. It is also part of BC Digital Literacy Framework, standards 3 and 4 that describe creative expression using technology and safe use of the internet. The NASA website is a rich resource for teachers and students and is an example of better digital resources.

Strategies to promote digital citizenship

This Professional Development (PD) section is designed to promote digital citizenship through all activities proposed. The participants are trained to implement technology in their art classes and deliver STEAM activities based on NASA’s safe and reliable website. The students will use Science data and apply their understanding in art activities.  During this PD, the participants also can solve problems and troubleshoot issues with the technology incorporated into the activities.  It is aligned with the ISTE Standards for educators 3, which states: “educators inspire students to contribute to positively and responsibly participate in the digital world.”

Exploring the NASA website, this activity allows a deep understanding of Satellite images captured by NASA and their applications. Through art classes, teachers establish a culture to promote curiosity and critical examination of online resources and fosters digital literacy and media fluency, aligned with ISTE 3b. In the activities designed, the participants use technology tools such as their mobile phones to record videos (Flipigrid) and take selfies photos in a space suitcase in space (NASA selfies). In addition, other online tools are integrated, such as Google Jamboard, Google slides, and Padlet. The technology integrated into the classroom empowers students in their active and digital citizenship. The BC Digital Citizenship Framework claims: “ students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behaviour.”
