Leaders build teams and systems to implement, sustain and continually improve the use of technology to support learning.
In 21st century education, teachers integrate technology into many ways to align student’s digital citizenship. The use of technology resources in the classroom must be accessible, available as a routine to support the lessons and goals achievement. It is essential to rethink the classroom design to support learning outcomes in the 21st education model. The classroom structure should allow teachers to facilitate diverse learning, collaborative work and enhance creativity and communication.
In my experience as a teacher in middle schools and universities, I would agree with experts that the core focus of modern classroom design is flexibility. Independent of the student’s age or level of education. A classroom with space and different spots allows students to move and choose where they feel more comfortable working and concentrating on their activities. For teachers, it is easier to manage behaviours and special needs. In addition, it facilitates fit technology in the classroom and explores a constructivist approach with group discussions and enhancing creativity.
According to Shantala Boss, a mental health counsellor, muted colours and lamps, bright and natural light, and plants reduce stress and anxiety (2018). I also would add to that fresh air coming through the doors and windows. As a biologist, I recognize how important it is to renew the air to achieve a high oxygen level and improve students’ concentration. As a designer, I would also say how essential a cleanroom is, reduced maps, banners, or furniture. Some students are more sensitive to concentrate in overwhelmed spaces.
Another thing I think is essential is a comfortable chair. A modern classroom should be engaging with bag chairs or more accessible chairs to have the mobility and flexibility to work with technology and interact. Chair with wheels also allows different arrangements such as circle, small groups, or students’ work individually when they need to. It also provides access to technology supplies. Finally, it means deliver students autonomy in their work environment and be more confident in their choices.
In conclusion, my classroom design to meet the 21st century should have:
- space to walkthrough
- different spots (carpet and bag chairs, flexible chair/tables, computer group station)
- muted colours, bright and natural light, natural plants
- fresh air coming through the doors and windows
- reduced maps, banners, or furniture’s around
- comfortable chair with wheels
- accessible technology supplies (interactive whiteboard, shelves with technology devices, computer stations)
